As Floridians, we are used to having rainy days that keep us from going outside for a few hours or even the whole day.  And when hurricanes come through, we’ve been asked (more times than I like to remember) to “hunker” down for a few days (sometimes without electricity, UGH!).  Well this time, things are a little different, we are ALL (like something out of a movie!) being asked to practice social distancing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and will be “stuck” inside for a bit longer than we are used to.

Instead of focusing on the negative, we’ve decided to be positive and grateful (mostly that we have electricity) for what we do have.  Luckily, most of these things (significant others, children, pets, food, water, electricity, televisions, gaming consoles, and cell phones) are right inside our own home.

We were planning to write a post like this a bit later, but considering what is going on, we thought now is a good time to share ways we have fun together (even when we aren’t “stuck” inside).  No matter what you do to occupy all of your time at home, just enjoy each other’s company and try to have some fun.

1. Play a game

Games are a great way to connect with each other, but there aren’t many two-player board games on the market (if you have kids (or are part of a throuple) this won’t be a problem for you).  The good news is there are some out there and they are a lot of fun!

Two player games we recommend (in no particular order):

Carcassonne

In this game you place tiles down to build roads and cities, amongst other things.  This game involves strategy to earn the most points possible to beat your opponent. One interesting thing about this game is the board is different every time because you build it from scratch each time you play!

Dropmix

If you love music, you will love this game.  You start out by choosing the type of game you want to play and then (if you are playing with someone else) you start creating unexpected mashups while competing against each other to get the most points.  I’ll be the first to admit that I thought this game was going to be a waste of money, but it is a lot of fun, especially when you get the expansion packs! This game can be a little pricey, but it’s on Amazon right now (3/19/2020) for $28.99!

Covert

In this game, you compete against your opponents to “help” your spies gather intel, break codes and collect equipment in order to complete your missions.  The object of this game is to have the most points by the time one player completes six missions. This game is strategic and a lot of fun!

Pandemic

The purpose of this game is to save the world from, you guessed it, a pandemic.  This game differs from most on our list because it is co-op, so you get to work as a team to help cure/eradicate diseases.  Each player is assigned a different “power” and they differ every time you play so it makes every game unique in it’s own way.

*Make it more interesting by purchasing the Legacy version, where you rip (that’s right you destroy the game you bought) up the cards after they’ve been played!

Classics:

Scrabble

Dominos

Poker

*Make it more interesting…you already know how, you’ve probably been doing this since college 😉

Battleship

*Make it more interesting by playing Battleshots, a game where you take a shot for each hit made to your ships.  You can make your own board out of pizza boxes or just use your old school game and take a shot on the side.

Not into board games?  Check out these video games:

Overcooked 2

We loved playing this game on Xbox One (other available platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Macintosh operating systems).  Be prepared to communicate more than you ever have before.  This game will challenge your relationship, but it’s a ton of fun!

Jackpack

Remember “You Don’t Know Jack”?!  Well this is the newer version of one of my favorite games from the 90’s.  The best part of this game is that it can be played with friends that aren’t even in the same house as you!

2. Cook a meal and/or bake a dessert

We both enjoy cooking and what faster, I mean better, way to do it than with a helper.  Grab a new recipe off Pinterest or an old favorite from one of your one cookbooks and get to work in the kitchen.  Put on some music, sing, and dance with each other when a jam comes on that makes you want to grab your honey closer to you (or shake your booty on them, we aren’t judging).

Joffrey’s famous cast iron skillet pizza
Steak, asparagus, and twice baked potatoes
Carrot Cake Cookies with Cream Cheese Frosting (check out the recipe here)
Something my Grandma used to make me when I was little, waffles and ice cream (this is probably when my ice cream addiction started)

3. Build a fort and watch your favorite old movies

We’ve done this a few times and it’s always so much fun!  As you can see from our pictures, we like watching “scary” movies in our fort.

You’re Next
The Conjuring

A few years ago, we discovered that Joffrey hadn’t seen some of my favorite movies and vice versa.  We decided to change that, so we started watching movies that one of us loves and the other hadn’t seen yet.  Try doing this or watching an old movie together that you both love. Either way, everything’s better when you’re in a fort!

Some of our favorites:

Christine’s (my list is a little longer to make up for Joffrey’s lack of diversity)

50 First Dates

40 Year-Old-Virgin

Crazy Stupid Love

The Departed

definitely, maybe

Family Stone

Fools Rush In

The Green Mile

Hook

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Inception

Pirates of the Carribean

The Proposal

The Princess Bride

The Sweetest Thing

Thirteen Ghosts

Vacancy

Vantage Point

Wedding Crashers

Zodiac

Joffrey’s

Con-Air (Joffrey really likes Nicholas Cage, like REALLY)

Inception (this one is our only duplicate)

The Prestige

The Rock

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

4. Build something

Joffrey started dabbling in woodworking about 5 years ago and it has been something that we’ve really enjoyed doing together (he does most of the hard work).  His current project is making a second elevated garden bed (because the first one turned out so good!). We know woodworking isn’t something everyone can or will want to do, so we’ve put together a short list of other things.

Complete a puzzle

Do a lego project

Construct a model airplane, car or even the Millennium Falcon!

Put together a pre-cut raised garden bed (can be found at Lowe’s or Home Depot)

Create a woodworking piece of art (or something that resembles it)

5. Make a scrapbook

For every year we are together, I plan to create a scrapbook that documents our highlights for that year.  I’ve completed 1 (out of 7) so far, I know… I’m a little behind at this point because LIFE. This can be something fun to do together.  You can look back at old photos and reminisce about times you remember fondly (or jog your memory of those you may have forgotten, if you have a bad memory like me).  My favorite websites to use are: Snapfish, Shutterfly, and Mixbook.  One of these sites usually has a coupon, so you can usually find a great deal.

6. Start a donation box

During our last move, we had no choice but to get rid of half of the stuff we owned (that’s right HALF!).  At first this was difficult, but then we got into the purge mindset and it became much easier. We still make donations once a year of things we no longer need and it’s become much easier to let go of stuff we don’t use.  Give it a try! Even if you don’t get rid of anything your stuff will be organized for a little while at least.

7. Complete a Quiz Book for Couples

We like to have interesting conversations and get to know each other better (yes, there are still things we don’t know about each other, even after 7 years!).  A quiz book designed for couples makes you both think and talk about things that don’t necessarily come up in your everyday life. One of our favorites can be purchased on Amazon (The Quiz Book for Couples).

8. Plant a garden

What’s more exciting than going outside and grabbing some fresh herbs from your very own garden?  Well, lots of things. But there is something great about being able to grab fresh ingredients for dinner, especially when you forgot to pick them up from the store.

Fresh tomatoes and herbs from our garden used to make homemade pasta sauce

9. Couples yoga

We have yet to try this one, but have been wanting to for a while.  I guess now would be a great time to see if it’s something we like!

10. Have dinner and drinks by candlelight

I love to eat in dimly lit places. Joffrey, on the other hand, does not.  For me it’s very calming and sometimes romantic. Who doesn’t need both of these things right now? So throw an umbrella in your drink, dim the lights, and forget about everything else for an hour or two. We all deserve it every once in a while.

11. Document where you’ve been and where you want to go

We bought maps to track our travels and to dream about where we want to go.  Each time we go somewhere or find a new place we want to explore, we put a pin in our map!  We also started adding a few of our favorite pictures from the locations under our maps to make it a little more exciting.

12. Cookout on the grill and make a picnic out of it

To me, food cooked on the grill just tastes better!  So why not throw some burgers on the grill and get some fresh air while you chow down (before summer gets here and it’s too hot)?!

13. Netflix and Chill (or Hulu, or Amazon Prime, or HBO Now…)

Our favorite TV shows:

A Million Little Things

Big LIttle Lies

Catastrophe

The Circle

Dead to Me

Four Wedding and a Funeral

Handmaid’s Tale

The Haunting of Hill House

How to Get Away With Murder

Insecure

Jack Ryan

Love is Blind

New Girl

The Office

Ozark

The Society

Temptation Island

Umbrella Academy

Working Moms

Joffrey wanted to add The Bachelor to this list, but I vetoed that.
