Like others, my 40th birthday plans were changed due to the coronavirus. When our 2020 travel plans to celebrate my milestone birthday were cancelled, to say I was bummed is an understatement. Instead of leaving for a transatlantic cruise a few days before my birthday, we were still social distancing from our home, dreaming of being on our cruise balcony staring out at the open sea.
When Joffrey asked me what I wanted to do to celebrate, initially I had no idea. Many things still hadn’t opened and I knew I didn’t want to spend the entire day wearing a mask. One day I was scrolling through Facebook or Instagram and came across a post for an account I follow, Get Up and Go Kayaking, and that’s when I knew what I wanted to do! The beaches had been closed for so long and I NEEDED to feel that ocean breeze and salt water on my skin.
We departed from the Jupiter Pointe Marina in Tequesta, FL and headed into the Indian River for our tour. We crossed over sandbars where we could see small conchs and rays, along with other sea life. While we were paddling we witnessed a stingray jump out of the water, held a GIANT conch and kept an eye out for any other wildlife. I really wanted to see a manatee, but it wasn’t in the cards for us that day. I was just grateful the bad weather held out until the end of our tour!
After our kayaking trip, our tour guide gave us coupons for free drinks at the Blue Point Bar & Grille. It was right next door and we were starving so we walked over to check it out. They have great outdoor seating, a pool and delicious food. Their coconut shrimp was some of the best I’ve ever had and it comes with a Piña Colada sauce that is incredible!
On our drive back home, we decided to take the scenic drive home and headed down A1A (we took the doors off the Jeep earlier in the week and wanted to enjoy it). We didn’t make it that far because the first view of the ocean I got I said “Oh my gosh, look at how pretty the water is”. So of course we stopped for a quick dip in the ocean and walk on the beach. In the short time we were there the weather went from beautiful to “Oh shit we gotta go”. Needless to say the rest of our ride home was very wet and we had the heat on.

To sum up the day, it was like a line out of Rupert Holmes’ song Escape….”If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain”
